Le groupe a commencé avec le guitariste Ryan Ross et le batteur Spencer Smith qui étaient amis. Le duo voulait seulement faire des reprises de Blink-182 jusqu'à ce qu'il recrute Brendon Urie au chant et Brent Wilson à la basse. Leur nom à été inspiré d'un passage de la chanson Panic du groupe Name Taken.

Pour se faire entendre, le groupe a laissé des commentaires sur le LiveJournal de Pete Wentz (de Fall Out Boy). Leur commentaires étaient l'URL de leur section de PureVolume. Pete Wentz a été si impressionné qu'il s'est rendu à Las Vegas pour les rencontrer personnellement. Il les a recommandé au label Fueled by Ramen qui les a transmis au label Decaydance, le label de Pete Wentz. Le groupe a enregistré son premier album A Fever You Can't Sweat Out à College Park au Maryland avec le producteur Matt Squire.

Panic! at the Disco a été nommé Groupe du jour par Spin magazine au début d'octobre 2005. Brent Wilson a quitté le groupe et a été remplacé par Jon Walker. Le groupe a reçu le Prix du meilleur clip aux MTV Video Music Awards 2006, pour I write sins, not tragedies (mtv). Le groupe a tourné quatre vidéos: "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", "But It's Better If You Do", "Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off" et "Build God, Then We'll Talk"

P!ATD a fait une tournée nommée "Nothing Rhymes with Circus" en 2006. Le groupe est passé en France en octobre. Ils vont commencer à enregistrer un nouveau CD le 1er juin 2007. Ce nouveau CD est censé être plus théâtral que le premier.

Il est passé à l'Olympia (Paris) le 21 août 2007 pour la tournée Decaydance Summer Fest en compagnie de Fall out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, The Academy is... et Cobra Starship.
